Abstrakt. As more and more societies are transforming into the cashless economy, questions about the social nature of this transformation are arising. With this paper we present the partially insight into the process of institutionalization of cashlessness in Poland. The paper elaborates the concept that the institutional field of cashlessness emerges with the gradual expansion of structure of interactions, solidification of interests, articulation of ideas and finally creation of sanctions and norms. The aim of this paper is to present the cashlessness’ institutionalization from the perspective of the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which are understood as the institutional entrepreneurs, for their choices support or stop the evolution of this institution. To reach our objectives, we use empirical data collected in research of SMEs’ sector in Poland – 74 individual in-depth interviews with owners of the SMEs. The analysis is grounded in the qualitative research design and the theory of neoinstitutionalism. The paper discuss the issue of rationality and how cashless payments are interpreted in that context by the small firms. We show that the complex impact of interlocked social interactions, financial sanctions, grand narrations and specific norms are creating the matrix for SMEs decision whether or not implement cashless payments into their business.
